Someone asked me this the other day, and for the life of me I can't remember if I've ever heard a reason for it:

In Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and other writers of the period, why did they often not spell out names of people and towns in full? You know ... talking about going to _____shire, or how Mrs S______ did this or that.

It's driving me nuts that I can't remember.

Chainreading, a book-tracking site I find utterly indespensible, offers various codes you can put in your websites that will keep a constantly updated list of what you're currently reading.

I've been trying to put this into my user info, but it does nothing. When I view the page after pasting it in, you can see neither the source code nor what it's supposed to produce.

Does anyone know what might be the matter? Here's exactly what the site says:

This script displays the books you are currently reading in a little customizable box that can be displayed on your website or blog. To use this code, simply copy and paste the code below onto your website.

When I grow up...

(When I grow up, I'm going to have a house with a library. And in this library shall be thousands of books, one cozy chair, and a floor-standing globe.)

What about you?
eleneariel: (reading/library)
I have a question for those who are more knowledgable than I. All I know about most modern music acts (pop/rock) are what I hear on the radio. I'm thinking about getting some CDs off of half.com (anyone have experience buying used CDs from them? Good? Bad?). I like bands like Maroon 5, Matchbox 20, Train...anybody care to comment on these and others like them, in regards to what are their best CDs, etc?

[livejournal.com profile] ransomedsea, I'm thinking you could help me. =)

*Have you ever seen a production of Carmen? What were your impressions? What was the music like? What kind of emotions did it bring out?

*How far along can you determine the sex of a baby via ultrasound?

*And how far along do normal women start showing?

*If you've ever eaten caviar--I won't touch the stuff--tell me about it.

*This is a long shot, but has anybody besides Hannah played a Bösendorfer piano? Describe it.

*Help me describe the sounds babies make while nursing. I know what it sounds like, I just can't get the right words. Slurping is out. It is NOT slurping.

*On the off chance any of you have ever been shot, particularly in a back alley at night by a rival gangster, tell me about that as well. ; )

It's vital to know for my nanowrimo novel whether all babies are born with blue eyes or not. A child who will grow up to have very dark brown eyes, would they still be blue at birth? And if so how soon would they change?

I love having knowledgable friends.

And this is the confidence which we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of Him. --I John 5:14-15

If we ask what is within the will of God, He answers and we obtain that which we have requested. This is well and good, and I believe it-- until I try to start applying it literally. I understand why God hasn't answered some of my prayers, since it's evident that I don't know what is in His will or not.

But. If it is God's will that "none should perish, but all have eternal life", then does that mean that every time a believer prays for the salvation of another, it will be answered (whether immediately or years later) in the affirmative?

And if someone dies unsaved, is it because nobody prayed for their salvation?

Why...
