[personal profile] savetheolives was AMAZING.

I must go pick my jaw up off the floor now.
eleneariel: (music2)
[personal profile] savetheolives's junior piano recital is in a couple of hours! Don't let her ever tell you differently - she's amazing. I'd probably be wildly jealous if she wasn't my best friend, and that's the truth. I pretty much just sit there in awe when she plays. :)

I'm not worried about how she'll do, but I know she would appreciate any and all prayers this evening. Pray for calm nerves and an enjoyable evening!

w00t!

And for once, I won't have to get up at 3:30am to get to the airport on time. Bliss.

[profile] my_everafter, sometime before Oct. 6 I will be getting in touch with you to try to work out a time to visit, if you are agreeable. :)

From [livejournal.com profile] patrick___ : The purpose of this meme is to see if any one LJer can be connected to most (if not all) of their LJ friends through real life connections. For the test to work, you and your friends, and their friends, and their friends' friends (ad infinitum) must comply with this meme. :-)

Task:
List all the LJers on your friends list you've actually met in "real life" before. Post this on your own LiveJournal, and ask all of your friends to do it as well.

These are the people I've met: [livejournal.com profile] _haydee_,[livejournal.com profile] angelsjoshie, [livejournal.com profile] bioniclesz, [livejournal.com profile] clothofdreams, [livejournal.com profile] emkay_smiles, [livejournal.com profile] fealinde_13, [livejournal.com profile] homeofmyown, [livejournal.com profile] jennymae, [livejournal.com profile] jkgeroo, [livejournal.com profile] laraemily, [livejournal.com profile] melyndie, [livejournal.com profile] mrsaudio, [livejournal.com profile] patrick___, [livejournal.com profile] pianistamy, [livejournal.com profile] ransomedsea, [livejournal.com profile] savetheolives, [livejournal.com profile] siemova, [livejournal.com profile] shooless, [livejournal.com profile] shorty1114, [livejournal.com profile] sicilianocalvo, and [livejournal.com profile] violetvale, and [livejournal.com profile] windandtherain.
eleneariel: (always)

1. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, J. K. Rowling

I only read this one once, in one great big night-long gulp the day it came out. I thought it was time to read it again before I attacked the 7th book.

2. Shakespeare: the invention of the human, Harold Bloom

I wish I owned this one just so that I could read it in short snippets and take in only the chapter about whatever play I was reading at the time -- it's a rather large amount of theory and information to read straight through. He lost me in some places, seemed mistaken in others, but was largely brilliant throughout. Except for his (rather unfortunate) obsession with Falstaff as the "perfect Shakespearean character", because I got tired of seeing said gentleman mentioned every other page and often every other paragraph. I do not jest.

3. The Quotable Book Lover, Ben Jacobs and Hjalmarsson

Yes, I sit down and read books of quotations. Wanna make something of it? I would remind you of Winston Churchill's words:

It is a good thing for an uneducated man to read books of quotations.... The quotations when engraved upon the memory give you good thoughts. They also make you anxious to read the authors and look for more.

4. A Spy for All Seasons, Duane R. Clarridge

Not as engaging as I had hoped. Oh well. It was more political than espionage in nature. Lots about Iran-Contra, which I'm not really old enough to be much interested in.

5. The Professor and the Madman, Simon Winchester

This is one of my top picks for the month. I always like books about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary (Tolkien was involved, you know!), and this one combines wordsmithing with the intriguing story of a man confined to a mental institution who just happened to play a large role in the Dictionary.

...few would disagree that serendipity in dictionaries is a most splendid thing indeed.

This has been the story of an American soldier whose involvement in the making of the world's greatest dictionary was singular, astonishing, memorable, and laudable -- and yet at the same time, wretchedly sad.

6. The Island of Lost Maps, Miles Harvey

One of my other top books for this month. It is incredibly engaging. It intersperses the story of one of this era's most prolific map thieves (he stole millions of dollars of maps, mostly out of rare-book libraries, often by simply slicing them out of books right under the noses of the librarians --cue horrified scream here--) with the long and almost noble history of mapthievery. Just ponder the fact that Columbus wouldn't have had a map to inspire him to try to find the Indies if it hadn't been stolen from Portugal.

7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, J. K. Rowling

Amazing. Also amazing to read most of it it with a friend. :) *waves at [personal profile] laraemily * Joys shared really are joys doubled!

8. Mother Tongue, Joel Davis

I didn't so much like this guy's writing style. Also: clearly he was a first time grandparent at the time of the writing, because he kept mentioning his grandson every couple of pages. That's irritating in what is supposed to be a scholarly work.

9. Queen Elizabeth II: a celebration of Her Majesty's fifty-year reign, Tim Graham

A birthday book from [personal profile] savetheolives! Beautiful collection of photographs, and quite a bit of text, too. I cried my way through the coronation pages, because she was so young and beautiful.

10. The Griffin and the Minor Canon, Frank Stockton

It's very sad when a book makes my book list before I get a thank you card out for it! This was another birthday book, and a marvelous one it is, too! ([profile] equuschickhas great taste, naturally.) It's a charming children's book from the 1800s, and liberally illustrated in a most beautiful manner.

11. The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde (Audio)

I've been listening to this in the car, just because it's been awhile since I've gotten my Wilde fix. This particular version is older, and the English accents are highly overdone, but then, that just adds to the comedic effect. I am most amused.

And thus ends July's books. I have quite a number in the works that I had hoped to get done by the end of the month, but they shall wait until the end of August rolls around to be revealed. I'm sure you won't die of curiosity in the meantime -- in any case, you can see what I'm reading now if you click on over here.

Firstly: [personal profile] savetheoliveshas compiled all those kindly comments alphabetically into several huge posts. Take a peek over here and check for your name ... you might be surprised.

Secondly: to all those who have done nice things for me recently,  thank you. I should have kept up and expressed my appreciation as they happened, but I didn't and now I feel bad mentioning any names because I know I'll leave someone out-- however, thank you cards have been flying out in the mail like crazy! If you haven't gotten one yet, you should soon. I have felt so loved and I want you all to know what blessings you are. :)

([personal profile] krikketgirl, I loved the postcard!)

eleneariel: (mari at the lake)
On the way home tonight I mostly kept my eyes on the bank of clouds (thankfully directly ahead of my path) where God was putting on a lightening show to rival any of man's fireworks displays. Beautiful.

I got a package from Australia today, sent by our very own [personal profile] blackswans! For the first time in my life, though, I am being a very, very good girl and waiting to open all my presents at my birthday dinner. Alas, this package almost ruined my resolve. It's not every day something comes from across the seas, you know. "Air mail" -- don't the words just thrill?

So maybe weird things make me happy. Leave me be in my randomly happy little bubble!
eleneariel: (blue me)

"There .. was .. a .. mighty ..." storm. I had to crawl along at 30 MPH most of the way home, but just as I was deciding to pull over and wait for the rain to abate before starting up into the hills towards home, it let up and I was able to make it in time for dinner after all.

Later I looked outside to find that the sky had turned a brilliant shade of tangerine. I took pictures, but I'm too lazy to post any tonight.

I am happy to report that my imaginative life is alive and well. In fact, I bet my imaginary world is better that your imaginary world! I should start writing again. I've let that slip.

I'm so happy to see so many of my friends in relationships, and married, and about to be married, and engaged, and with someone they love ... I know sometimes there's the worry that your single friends are sick of hearing about your love, but let me tell you: I'm not. It's a beautiful thing, and it makes me so happy to see my friends happy. :)

Anyone know of  a good way to rid a cat of fleas? They are stubborn little buggers. I've resorted to frequent baths, which we all hate. It kills me to see him looking like a drowned otter, but it's that or mom threatens to kick him out. Well, probably not really, but she's being very generous to even let him be an inside cat at all, the darling creature, as she's really not a pet person at all.

How can you not be a pet person?!

I found a new drink obsession today: Dole's fruit sparklers. They're not full of sugar, taste good, and have at least a bit of nutritional value, especially compared to the super-sweet caramel latte I thought I wanted.

Goodness gracious, look at the time. This girl has got to go accomplish something in life!

Edit: I just decided that I hate this icon. That's all.

Before [profile] ruthettehas a heart attack: This is not her book. It did, however, come to me in the mail yesterday (I joined www.paperbackswap.com for the sole purpose of acquiring it!) and now it is all read and WOW. I should have made the reading of it last longer, but it was so good, I couldn't help flying through it. Connie Wilson is brilliant, not the least of which for the character of Flip.

So. Yeah. This evening, as soon as I had dispensed with my familial obligations, I curled up on the rocking chair with a big cup of coffee and finished it off. And now I have everything else to catch up on. Toodle-pip!
eleneariel: (glamour)

I got a big box in the mail today. Inside it I found ...

I do believe it is a hat!

I adore this hat.

It makes me look quite mysterious, don't you think?

THANK YOU, [profile] jkgeroo! (proper real thank-you note coming soon in the mail
but I couldn't resist the opportunity to picture-post first. ;))
eleneariel: (mailbox)

When I got home I found waiting for me:

Chocolates from [personal profile] savetheolives. GOOD chocolates. And a card!

A letter from [personal profile] elvishcalarilme, which gives me the perfect excuse for writing back. =)

My AAA card, finally, only hours after I called to complain that I hadn't gotten it yet and made them send me another one. *facepalm*

A box from  Edward R. Hamilton, Bookseller, which contained a number of fantastic books at even more fantastic prices.  *squee*

More credit card offers. I get at least one a day now. It's annoying but also in some strange way sort of a rite of adulthood. I get great satisfaction in throwing them away.

And if we're counting electronic mail as well ... 40 41 emails in 20 minutes between a certain best friend and myself.  Woohoo!

A recap:

The ball: delightful! I danced every dance that I wished to dance, and I one that I wasn't sure of but that turned out well. Had a blast. Dress was perfect. *happy grin* Went to bed at 4:30 am. Was mildly tired.

New Years Day: Partied, didn't care that Oklahoma lost to Boise State, saw Eragon (ehhhh, yeah. It was almost better than the book and that is sad. Also, the egg looked like a giant blue pill from a pharmasudical commercial.)

Today: Hurray for wonderful people like [personal profile] melyndie  and [profile] jennymae ! We had a great time shopping and drinking tea and Miss Somebody Or Other's Tea House ([profile] patrick___ , I saw only two men there: one looked like the proverbial bull in a china shop, and the other was with a girl. Case in point!) Also, we watched Lady in the Water. I liked it.

And that's the end. For now. *wink*

In which Gmail Chat gets scary on a Sunday afternoon. [Censored;  Names Not Changed to Protect the Innocent.]

Marie: I WILL HAUNT YOUR DREAMS!
Hannah: I dare you.
Marie: Just wait and see.
Hannah: "Oh, it's a leaf! It might hurt me!"
Marie: Hahahaha.
Hannah: I ain't skeered of nobody.
Marie: Subtle payback for the patty comment
Hannah: Oh ha ha. :P
Marie: I will HAUNT your DREAMS!
Hannah: Just for that, that's all I'm going to call him.
Marie: MwahahahaHS
Hannah: HS?
  Must be some code.
Marie: Mistake
Hannah: I know. ;)
Marie: Although perhaps it could be a ghost snake:
  MwahahahiSSSSSS!
Hannah: Oh dear. I'm frightened.
Marie: oh noes!
  the dreaded ghost snake!
Hannah: OH NOES!!!11111!
Marie: it has come to eeeeeat our braaaaains!
Hannah: Ew, that's like Night of the Living Dead. :P

I love this girl. *beams at  [personal profile] savetheolives

To talk to you on the phone for half an hour while you lay in the grass (in the sunshine, in the front yard) because you are too tired to move.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what friends are for.

Have you noticed the moon in the last few days? Big...bright...a true harvest moon. I woke up around one last night (who am I kidding? I was barely asleep) and thought day was dawning outside, it was that bright.

Go look at the moon.

I find it amazing that though we are scattered throughout the world, we all see the same moon. It makes you feel more real to me.

Goodnight, friends. Goodnight, moon.

Tomorrow at 6:00am the town's largest annual rummage sale starts.

I don't have to be at work until 8:15.

Hmmmm.

If I get up at 5:00...and leave by 6:30...

---
And now in other news, even though [personal profile] savetheolives and I are both busy, we've managed to exchange 18 emails in the past twenty minutes. In hindsight, Google Chat might have been a better option...

Update: 32. And now I have to go back to work.
eleneariel: (pray)
I had some fun, inconsequential things to say, but I can't bring myself to write them just now.

Guys, whether you know her or not, pray for [profile] alissamarie. Her father died today, just two and a half days before her wedding.

I know most of you have already seen this plea on any number of other LJs, but I felt compelled to do my part in case there was even one person who hadn't seen yet.

My heart is sore.
eleneariel: (Hagen)
Lesson for today: putting bandaids on a cat doesn't work. [profile] equuschick, remember when your sister managed to cut her foot so badly on a disposable razer? Hagen was playing around in the shower while I cleaned the bathroom today, and started batting a razer around before I realized the blade was uncovered. He sliced open one of the pads on his right front paw. =\ I've had a time keeping him off the furniture and carpets while waiting for it to stop bleeding. Like I said - bandaids do not work. Lol.

I cleaned today. Top to bottom, left to right, front to back. I discovered that I rather like cleaning house. Never thought that would happen.

[profile] tosayhello, you have made me one very happy Italian-wannabe woman today. =) What a sweet thing to do, combining three of my favorite things in one: mail, Italy, and antiques! *happy* Btw, you have such  lovely handwriting. I'm ashamed to send you anything now. =)

I've been watching the BBC version of North and South (which is wonderful!), so now I am walking around talking with a British accent and am thinking I'll sit down and write some letters. With a quill pen.

Guess what time it was before I ate my first meal of the day? 2:30. But it tasted wonderful. Tonight I'm having french vanilla pudding. What should I embellish it with? Kaluah comes to mind. Possibly dried cranberries. Offer me suggestions!
