2007 Year In Review Survey
Dec. 31st, 2007 09:36 pm1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?
Well, a few things that I won't mention, but among the ones that I will -- I went on a road trip alone, planned and pulled off a midnight Harry Potter release party, started weight lifting, took a prescription medicine the entire year, lost several toenails, and went without electricity for over three weeks total due to two major ice storms.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I sort of unconsciously resolved to read more books in 2007 than I did in 2006. My forthcoming End of the Year Book Wrap-up Post will prove that I managed this one quite successfully.
I always intend to make some grand resolutions but come the beginning of a year I rarely think of any worthy ones. I don't like to make vague ones like "be a better person" because 1) I should always be trying to do that anyway, and 2) there's no official end where I can say that I fulfilled it, and that's discouraging.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth or get pregnant?
Lots of LJ people and a few ladies at church.
4. Did anyone close to you get married?
Lots of LJ people! Lol. And my church's youth pastor eloped. :)
5. Did anyone close to you die?
A beloved church elder. And ... I feel sure there was someone else. Weird.
6. Travel?
Some -- Idaho in January, Kansas and Missouri in May (and also to Norman for the Medieval Faire), Georgia in October.
7. Did you move anywhere?
To a new state of mind.
8. What was the best month?
Probably ... some time in the middle of the year. Maybe July.
9. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?
Better control over my emotions. The ability to not let petty things get to me.
10. What date(s) from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
New Year's 07, the Medieval Faire in May,
savetheolives's recital in October.
11. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Missing only a few days exercise and pushing myself more; consequently, actually having visible muscles for the first time! On the whole taking better care of myself.
12. What was your biggest failure?
Letting other people's bad attitudes rub off on me.
13. Did you suffer illness or injury?
A broken toe, lots of bruises, various burns, scrapes, and cuts and about three colds. I think a can of tuna landed on my nose at one point during the year.
14. What was the best thing you bought?
Sir Galahad! He's been my baby for nine months now, and I still get a thrill when I see him in the parking lot waiting for me. :D
15. Whose behavior merited celebration?
savetheolives's, unquestionably; also special kudos to
windandtherain. Really, all of my friends merit celebration. :)
16. Whose behavior made you appalled and/or depressed?
My grandmother, an uncle, and others best left unnamed.
17. Where did most of your money go?
Into the bank. Where did I spend the most? Buying a car. Gas. Insurance. Taxes. Cell phone. Clothes. Food. Probably in that order, more or less.
18. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I didn't actually get really excited about much this year. =\ I don't know why I was so apathetic. I enjoyed each wonderful experience as it happened, but I didn't seem to spend much time anticipating it beforehand. And that just takes a lot of the fun out of life! I guess I was thrilled with my car, though. And spending a week with
savetheolives! And I was pathetically happy when the new coffee shop opened up.
19. What song will always remind you of 2007?
"The Black Parade", My Chemical Romance
20. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? more joyful, let's say.
ii. thinner or fatter? Well, last year at this time I was a little scared by how little I weighed, so I'm not sorry to say I'm plus about three pounds. But I've gained a lot of muscle this year. :)
iii. richer or poorer? Richer.
21. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Praying. Catching up with friends.
22. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Being upset about things I can't change. Worrying.
23. How will you be spending New Year's Eve/Day?
Eve: working. Day: catching up on other projects.
24. What was an unexpected surprise?
How something that I'm not talking about turned out. Bwaha.
25. Did you fall in love in 2007?
With the writing of Amy Tan, margaritas, and the jersey wrap dress.
26. What was the best concert you've been to this year?
The Rogues! Outdoors in the biggest Medieval faire in the state. Awesome.
27. What was your favorite TV program?
I don't watch enough TV to have one.
28. Do you dislike anyone now that you didn't dislike this time last year?
I'm sure the answer is yes, but I can't pinpoint a specific person -- I suppose that's a good thing. :)
29. What was the best book you read?
You'll find that out tomorrow when I announce my 2007 Book Awards!
30. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Oh man ... The Rogues, Jason Mraz, Clannad, and a lot of really great rock bands that I can't remember if I heard first this year or if it was late 2006. Whatever.
31. What did you want and get?
A perfect car and those really really cute 4 1/2" stiletto-heeled sandals which mom thought were silly but which make me feel like a million dollars, not to mention TALL (and garner tons of comments. Including rather embarrassing ones from old men. At CHURCH. I don't think I've blogged that story yet ... lol.)
32. What did you want and not get?
A personal library with room for all my books, a library ladder, and a floor-standing globe.
33. What was your favorite film of this year?
Ocean's 13? Gosh, I don't know. I didn't see a very many.
34. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 21 again (okay, 23), and I don't remember a whole lot except that my dad gave me an antique brass spittoon. :D
35. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Spending less time being annoyed at life.
36. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
Er. Classily-eclectic-artsy-slight-bohemian-chic. Always surprising but generally tasteful. Not afraid to be odd, but mostly normal. A bundle of contradictions. Fond of impractical looking shoes and wearing costumes in public.
37. What kept you sane?
My imagination, God, and
savetheolives.
38. What political issue stirred you the most?
Illegal immigration and the FairTax. And obviously the presidential race.
39. Who did you miss?
Anybody who I wished to be with when I was away.
40. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Um? That's an odd question. The answer's still got to be Sonny, even if he's only a celebrity in the world I've created for him. (To those new to this journal: Sonny is my fictional gangster. I made him up out of my own head. He's marvelous. And it means I don't have to share.)
41. Who was the best new person you met?
I met some wonderful people for the first time this year --
jkgeroo,
laraemily,
windandtherain,
angelsjoshie,
ransomedsea,
jennymae, and
my_everafter come to mind first. Of course I've known all of these people for much longer, but I only got around to meeting them in person this year. :)
42. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007.
The value of playing my cards close to the vest.
43. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Tell me to quote one and I'll quote four:
I'm a legionnaire
Camel in disrepair
Hoping for a frigidaire to come passing by
I am on reprieve
Lacking my joie de vive
Missing my gay paris
In this desert dry
The Legionnaire's Lament, The Decemberists
Do you ever wonder what happens to the words that we send
Do they bend, do they break from the flight that they take
And come back together again with a whole new meaning
In a brand new sense, completely unrelated to the one I sent
Did You Get My Message, Jason Mraz
well you’re never gonna guess
where i’ve been been been
and i have no regrets
Curbside Prophet, Jason Mraz
And of course, the most profound of all:
Ha la la la la la la life is wonderful
Ah la la la la la la life goes full circle
Ah la la la la la la life is so full of
Ah la la la la la la life is so rough
Ah la la la la la la life is wonderful
Ah la la la la la la life goes full circle
Ah la la la la la la life is our love
Ah la la la la la
Life is Wonderful, Jason Mraz
