I heard about this and I am horrified. This is not a decision for the government to make, for one. For another, there are some woman who cannot breastfeed due to medical problems. I breast-fed and bottle-fed my children. My sister was not able to because of medical reasons, what would my sister and others like her do. This is another example of the government taking away our rights. I am stepping off my soap-box now.
They're not forbidding people from using formula...they're just trying to stop the formula companies from pushing it in new mothers' faces, thus discouraging them from breastfeeding.
Sorry for my rant, but when I first heard the story, it was portrayed that the hospital was not allowed to give babies formula while they were in their.
Oh, that's understandable...the article starts out talking about how NYC has banned restaurants from selling food containing trans fat or allowing smoking in their establishments, so it kind of implies they've banned formula across the board as well, I guess!
I read it and it's awesome! When I had Emily I was given a “breastfeeding success” bag in the hospital. Guess what it contained? A can of formula. And let me tell you- it did NOT help my breastfeeding success. All it did was make me doubt my ability to breastfeed and provide an unnecessary escape route during those first long nights with a fussy newborn. That is the undoing of many mothers' attempts at breasteeding. Sad isn't it? I think it's about time these formula “breastfeeding success” packets were banned as they are obviously not helping anyone. :(
I think it's great that they're promoting breastfeeding instead of formula.
But they shouldn't use the language that formula is being "banned," because that immediately makes it sound as if the government is sticking its nose in where it doesn't belong. Again.
I think that while the formula shouldn't just be given out to everyone the way it usually is, I think maybe it should still be an option, maybe only if asked for. I don't know.
But the language about it being "banned" needs to go.
