It's been exceptionally stormy of late, and early this morning another line of storms came through. The wind woke me up at 5:30 and I knew rain wasn't far behind, so I got up and went about closing all the windows. In the process, I ran straight into the fireproof pad that our woodstove sits on, a brick-like object about an inch and a half higher than the carpet, and there, my friends, is where I broke my little toe. It hurt a LOT but I heroicly went on and closed the rest of the windows. Then I limped to my mother's room.

"Hey mom? I think I just broke my toe."

"Ughhh. Wha?"

"My toe. It's broken. It hurts a LOT."

"I'm sorry, dear. Go back to sleep."

So I lay back in bed for another hour, in PAIN and AGONY, and when we get up she looks at it (swollen and black and blue) and pronounces that yep, it must be really broken. I limp dramatically as proof.

At 9:00 I picked up the soon-to-be-mine car and took it to my mechanic, who gave it rave reviews except for one vacuum hose that had slipped off. Back to the dealer, he takes it to his mechanic to fix the hose, I sit around and wait, he comes back, I sign fifty different things, he goes to the bank to fetch the title, I sign some more things, I write a check, and behold, I own the car, 100% free and clear and just barely make it to work by noon.

It's a God-thing, let me tell you. It's has insanely low miles, only one previous owner, and is absolutely beautiful. The radio tells me the title and artist of the songs that play. It's so roomy for a small car! I feel quite certain God wanted me to have this one, because the dealer bought it especially for a young girl, for her first car -- and she didn't buy it even though it was perfect because it wasn't red. Then another person tried to buy it, but their credit was bad and they couldn't get a loan. While I was sitting there in the office today, two more people called wanting to buy it, and a third couple stopped by in person. I felt so bad taking it away from all these other people who wanted it, and then again, I didn't feel the least bit bad. :)

As for the name -- My previous car was the Teddy Roosevelt, and a couple weeks ago, as I prepared to start shopping for a new one, I was thinking of good names and the very first thing that popped into my head was Sir Galahad. I couldn't figure out why; it's not like Galahad is one of my favorite characters or anything. No other names seemed to stick with me, however, and now I see why -- Galahad with his golden hair is a perfect name for this car. :)

Let's be clear -- if a broken toe is -800 points, a new car is +405,639,209,236,166,543.

My good blade carves the casques of men,
My tough lance thrusteth sure,
My strength is as the strength of ten,
Because my heart is pure.
The shattering trumpet shrilleth high,
The hard brands shiver on the steel,
The splinter'd spear-shafts crack and fly,
The horse and rider reel:
They reel, they roll in clanging lists,
And when the tide of combat stands,
Perfume and flowers fall in showers,
That lightly rain from ladies' hands. ...

.... So pass I hostel, hall, and grange;
By bridge and ford, by park and pale,
All-arm'd I ride, whate'er betide,
Until I find the holy Grail.

Ugh. I'm REALLY sorry about your toe. :-P Do you have to go to the doctor or anything for broken toes? Or is that one of those things that just heals on its own?

WHOOHOO!!!! Sir Glahad looks great!! I'm so glad you're happy with it, and that it seems to be a God-send. :-D

Apparently it just heals by itself? Mom and dad have both broken toes and not gone to the doctor for it. I think they only thing they could do is give me pain meds -- which doesn't sound like such a bad idea right now, haha.

Still doing old comments....

So how's the toe now? Broken bones sound SO painful. :-P Thankfully I've never had anything close (no sprains, cracks, splits, hairline breaks, etc., etc.). I think I'd complain a LOT if I ever have a major (or relatively major) injury!

It's been a lot better, thanks. :) Now it pretty much only hurts if I bend it the wrong way or something.

I'm thankful to have never broken any major bones, too!

Owwwwie! Breaking digits is a pain (pun not intended) because there's not really anything you can do for it :P

They don't put your toe into a little tiny cast?

Date: 2007-05-07 11:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrs617.livejournal.com
Nope. Even breaking a thumb or finger doesn't get a cast, just a splint. Unless you have multiple breaks, then they may put a cast on your whole hand/foot.

Could you imagine trying to put a cast on a toe?

Not really. And your friends would all need microscopes to sign it!

Bwahaha! Nope, no cast. :D You can kind of tape it to the next toe to keep it from moving around and getting bumped, but I haven't yet.

I got a kick out of imagining people trying to sign something with a microscope. "I keep trying, but nothing is showing up!" "did you remember to put ink in the scope?"

Okay- that's all well and good, but what about your trip to the hospital? I thought you mentioned a hospital? Maybe I'm just dreaming. I'm sorry about your toe!

No hospical visit, thankfully. :) I felt like it at about 5:35 this morning, though. :P

Congrats on the car! I might have missed it but did you say what kind it is? You said the other was a Ford Focus is this also a Ford?

I had a broken toe once. My mom dropped a crock-pot on it. I feel your pain and am very sorry for you. I would recommend taping it to the next toe over until the morning. You don't realize how much your feet move around until you hit something with the injured piggy and he starts to squeal.

Olds Alero GLS, the last car Oldsmobile made. It's been kept in tip-top shape and barely driven. :)

My goodness, a crock-pot! o_O I bet she felt really bad about that little incident.

Thanks for the tip, I'm off to tape my toe. :)

Sorry about your toe. I've broken toes before as well and there's not much you can do. It's basically a waste of money to go to the hospital for a broken toe, since all they can do is tape it to the toe next door. It takes about 3 weeks for bones to totally heal. They have to form a bony callus which takes time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_healing
During the healing time, the fracture does need to be stabilized to enable the callus to form and not be disturbed, every time it's jolted it has to start all over again. So taping your toe to the next one is the easiest way to do that. It'll also help with the pain, since every time the fractured part moves it is very painful. So my semi-professional advice is to tape your toe (I recommend 1/2" waterproof tape) to it's neighbor for 2 to 3 weeks, changing the tape every day or 2. And take ibuprofen regularly to help with pain and inflammation. That's what I did last time (a couple years ago) and it helped a lot.

It's feeling better as long as I don't try to move it, so that's good. :) Thanks for the info!

Ouch! Very sorry about the toe. Little toes can sure hurt a powerful lot, for being such a little member. =P

I'm happy for you about the car though--that's great! I like his name too. Hehe

Gorgeous car, Marie!! But that's terrible about your toe.. is it really broken? You drove with a broken toe!? And then went to work?

Don't worry, it's the little toe on my left foot, not my driving foot. :)
