Sometimes I just get to thinking about how weird it is that my name is "Marie."

Names are indeed a weird thing. Kind of like when you say a word over and over and over again and suddenly the word becomes weird which freaks you out so you stop. Yes, almost everything is weird.

You've expressed it exactly!

It's just ... strange! I like it, don't get me wrong, but it's a strange name; so French, so stereotyped, so old-ladyish, and so when I stop and think about it, it seems weird that it means "me". It sounds funny when I say it because I'm lazy and usually don't bother to fully pronounce the A (Mer-EE instead of Mah-REE). And it's weird because my parents didn't name me after anyone, or have any reason to choose Marie, and don't even remember how they found it or why they liked it! Mom admits they didn't even think about my name that much because they were so convinced I was going to be a boy. They put all their energy into a boy name, Aaron Christian, which they ended up never using. Lol.

All in all, it's strange to think that an arbitarily chosen name has become who I am. And the longer I think about it, the weirder it sounds. :D

What would you prefer to be called? :)

I think it's a nice name although I agree it's a bit odd your parents had no real reasoning behind choosing it. I am thankful to my parents that all of our names (first middle for each child) were carefully planned and selected ahead of time. I've put some thought into naming of children if I ever have any already and personally it's something I would insist on. Some reasoning for the name. But that could be partly due to how I was brought up and my parents influences.

I know a family who doesn't choose names for their children until after they are born -- sometimes it's several weeks before they feel like they know their child well enough to choose a name for them.

I dunno, that seems strange to me to. It's like what do you call the child for the first few weeks? It?

I thought it was strange too ... they just call them "baby"!

I do the same thing.:) It like what was said about other words. Sometimes, the more you say it, the more it makes you convinced that it is weird.;)
Isn't it odd when a name actually fits someone though?

I think it's the middle name of half the girls I meet. :)
