-I only know my bank account numbers backwards.

-[livejournal.com profile] crystallia wins Gold Stars and whatever other virtual accolades I can heap upon her, for behold, I have in my possession a Cranberries CD and it is Good. I knew nothing about the band when I first listened to it, and I kept thinking, "gosh, what a classic Celtic-sounding voice encased in such non-Celtic music," and lo and behold, it turns out the lead (only?) vocalist is from Ireland. She has the sound of the music I used to listen to on Thistle and Shamrock... I miss that program. Celtic music has the power to move me so deeply.

- I like dark wash jeans very much.

- I went for a spin in the new Mercedes. *geeky grin* I still haven't gotten a decent picture of it, but one will come along one of these days.

- [livejournal.com profile] patrick___ asked me which was my favorite of the books I've read so far this year. I take this reading stuff Seriously, so I've taken some time to ponder and I believe I have come upon the answer: Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point. I've read a whole bunch of good books, fiction and non, and it's so hard to pick favorites, but wow, that one kept me riveted. Go read it.

- Part of me wishes I was doing NaNo again this year, and the other part says "Been there, wrote that, got the novel to prove it."

I got addicted to "Dreams" by the Cranberries after hearing you mention it. ;)

Yay! It's a good one to be addicted to.

Hmmm... now I'm all curious about their CD! Mayhap a library nearby will have it, or some such... What do you think of the other songs? I love Dreams, but I'm reticent to purchase a CD on the merits of only one delightfully fun & catchy song.

I'm looking forward to car pics!

I like the whole CD. Lots of songs with a sort of 'dreamy' quality to them - hard to describe, but something I like.

Oh, how lovely! I'll have to check it out :-)

I seal envelopes with water because the adhesive they use has gluten in it. Crazy, I know.

I think of that every time I lick an envelope.

You say you miss The Thistle and Shamrock. You do know that it's still on the air, don't you?

Is it? I haven't found it on either of my NPR stations in years, but maybe it's there and I haven't known about it! *runs to google*

I used to tape every show. =) I still have most of them, too.

Well, perhaps I've just been listening to old shows without knowing it, but it's on every week down here where I live. :-)

Old or new, isn't it glorious? My favorite shows were the ones devoted to the Breton walking songs.

Yes, I really enjoy it when I get a chance to listen. My dad turns it on sometimes, and that's when I hear it.

I often hear it when I chance to be driving home on a Saturday night... I can't think why you wouldn't be getting it in OK. How sad would that be :-(

Did you find it?

Date: 2006-10-29 04:15 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] eattheolives.livejournal.com
Nope. None of those stations reach this far. Apparently they don't think celtic plays well to this area of the country, because all the music programs we have are jazz or folk. =\

I have trouble picking "favorite" books, but one of the best ones that I've read recently is To Say Nothing of the Dog, by Connie Willis. And then there was The Doomsday Book by the same author. Both of them completely fabulous!

Are you serious? Those are too of my very favorites! Doomsday Book is so well written, but so depressing that I usually pick To Say Nothing of the Dog as my favorite, but wow.

Also, I love time travel in all forms.

I've read a couple other of her books and haven't enjoyed them nearly as much. Passage was okay, but I didn't understand what was going on and that always bothers me.

Connie Willis is awesome. I'm trying to remember if I ever read a whole novel by her or not, but I do remember thinking she had a great way of writing, back when I was into reading a lot of science fiction.

By the end of Doomsday Book, I was a twitching pile of nerve endings. So sad!

I just checked Passage out of the library yester day. I haven't started it yet, but I'll let you know in a few days if I understand it.

Do! Maybe you can explain it to me. Whatever the ending meant, I think it was sad. *frown*

I started last night. I'm at the bit where Joanna first starts helping Dr. Wright screen all of his test subjects. Like it a lot so far!

That book sounds really interesting. I did a Google search on it. The first review I read was kind of negative, but it still sounded like an interesting book. I like reading interesting theories about society like that.

Gah, I want to see this negative review! And then strangle the reviewer.

I cannot give that book enough superlatives - it was WONDERFUL. A fast read, too (I read it on the plane back from Georgia), but so interesting. You should start with his first one, though. It's called Blink and it's just as good.

He's not totally negative about it, but just kind of cynical about his premise I guess.

Blink sounds like an interesting book too!

Okay, I can understand where he was coming from, so I guess I won't strangle him this time. My facination with the book comes more from the interestingness of the ideas, not believing they are inheriently correct in all points.

Yeah, I like reading books like that too. I'll definitely have to add those to my reading list.

Oh, do! And let me know when you read them what you think.

Freakonomics was the same sort of thing, but I liked these two books a lot better.

I use some other method for the same reason as Hannah. Occasionally, though, I don't have the luxury of getting something else (this happens sometimes at work), so I do end up licking it. The rest of the day I'm in dread of glutening effects. Hasn't happened yet, though.

I wish you were doing NaNoWriMo again this year, too! If only because this is my first year experiencing the trials of NaNo and might need a support system. ;) Of course, there's always the inspiration of you having completed it last year. :D

Isn't Malcolm Gladwell the same who wrote Blink? Or am I getting names confused?

I'm sure the glueten is negligible, but taking chances isn't a good idea. =P Spit on your finger or something. =)

Oh, I'd be happy to be your NaNo cheerleader! I really had a lot of fun doing it. The biggest thing for me was not to get behind - which meant doing about 1,500 words a day, I think - because I knew if I got behind I'd be discouraged and think I could never get done in time. I got it finished three days early. =D

Yup, Gladwell wrote both Blink and The Tipping Point. Good books, both.

Wisdom from the master! :D

-makes notes-

Don't get behind...1,500 words a day...don't get discouraged if you do get behind; keep plugging ahead...complete 50,000 words three days early...skip meals if necessary...don't sleep...if it can't be helped, dream of writing....

I think I may be adding my own, there.

Writing through meals really worked for me. ; ) I'd drag my laptops around to local resturants and try to eat while typing madly...I got some funny stares. =D
